BARNARDSVILLE, NC --
Sneaky iron, huh? Yep, submicron iron can get through standard 1 to 5 micron filtration. This customer was experiencing discolored water, despite having a spin-down sediment filter and an iron filter. After testing the water here in the office, we discovered that their iron particle size is less than 0.1 microns. We recommended a 20" BB .02 micron Nano-Ceram canister filter (blue).
There are pros and cons to these rather large and heavy canister filters. Without adequate run time, it's hard to tell how often it will need to be changed. With such a small micron size filter, the chances of it gumming up fairly quickly increases, and sometimes you find this out when you lose water flow in the house. An advantage of the 20" BB Nano-Ceram is a lower cost up front to install, and they are generally effective at catching sub-micron iron, depending on the flow rate. However, changing the filter can get pretty expensive, depending on how often it needs changing.
